The Counsellor

I was born in Mexico and moved with my family to Canada at the age of 7. Immediately upon entering Canada, I faced some unfortunate challenges, especially for a young girl moving to a new country. For example, merely a year after arriving in Canada, at the age of 8, I was raped by a family acquaintance. This left me vulnerable to several years of sexual abuse by a family member. And, at various times during my school years, I experienced being ridiculed and shamed by other school children due to the stigma attached to my cultural background. As a self conscious, now overweight, adolescent whose trust in people had been shattered, I often escaped by reading books and creating a “safe” world in my mind.

As I grew up, I avoided the conscious awareness of my anxiety and depression by keeping myself extremely busy and by being overly excited about life. It was not until my late twenties when an unstable long-term relationship ended that a crack in my defense mechanisms caused a barrage of emotions, memories, and delayed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms.

This started my own journey to healing and wholeness.

I’ve  always been passionate about making a difference in people’s lives. That combined with what I learned through my own healing inspired me to pursue a career in counselling.

My goal is to tailor sessions to suit each client with compassion, understanding and confidentiality. I work with each individual to help them attain personal and, if desired, spiritual growth to overcome life’s challenges and hurdles.

While my own spirituality is decidedly rooted in my relationship with Jesus Christ, I am sensitive to meeting you where you are at in your spiritual search/journey.

In the past, I have worked at Chilliwack Alcohol and Drug Center, Chilliwack Counselling Center, and in Northern Mexico with the Low German Mennonite people. I am currently in private practice taking clients locally but I also contract through www.anxietycentre.com where I take clients via phone or Skype from all over the world. I have also always been involved simultaneously in Community Living and while I no longer formally work in this field I usually do some form of respite.

I have lived in Chilliwack, British Columbia since my early 20’s but moved to Elgin County in Southwestern Ontario in 2014 to be closer to family.  My undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministries completed in 1993 and a Master of Arts in Counselling completed in 1995.
